Cheap fuel, or mutant bugs eating away our atmosphere?

This guy's got some laudable goals, but I wonder why he thinks a suicide gene equals security?  As a geneticist, he seems to be forgetting about mutation, which is more than a little disturbing...experimentation like this has the potential to make all of our SF-like fears a frightening reality.  Still, cheap fuel would be nice, eh?

Hmmm. The only significant problem I see with this is that we can't transform existing life forms to eat CO2. Like members of the Peace & Freedom Party. Or fans of Insane Clown Posse.

"We are a ways away from designing people. Our goal is just to make sure they survive long enough to do that."
